Immersion, a developer of haptic technology, has filed a lawsuit against Facebook parent Meta, alleging that it violated its patents by creating an industry-leading virtual reality (VR) headset. In a complaint filed Thursday in federal court in Waco, Texas, Immersion alleges that the market-leading Meta Quest 2 infringes on six patents covering haptic technology.
In video game systems and controllers, haptics allows users to experience vibrations that simulate real-life forces, such as blocking a punch in a virtual boxing game. Meta Quest 2 sales will reach 8.7 million units in 2021, double the previous year, and capture 80% of the market. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pledged $10 billion a year to realize his VR-powered metaverse vision.
Immersion is seeking a court order preventing Meta from using the infringing technology and is seeking an undisclosed amount of damages. Meta has yet to comment.
