Android 13: The OS now informs you about active apps and lets you close them quickly

Google’s new smartphone operating system is on its way. Android 13 reveals some innovations in the beta version, including the “Active Apps”. Android 13 is coming to the AOSP and the Google Pixel in the fall. Until then, you can already see in the beta phase what Google wants to adjust after the big Android 12 update. This includes a quickly accessible display that provides information about “active apps”.

Apps that are draining the battery in the background can now be terminated more quickly

It can be found below the quick settings if you pull the notification bar all the way down. Then in a row at the bottom of the screen, there is the power button, quick access to the system settings and the display of the active apps. This means apps that work permanently in the background. For example sports apps that continuously count your steps.

For me on the Pixel 6 it looks like this:

This really only means apps that are active in the background. For example, YouTube in the foreground will not be listed. However, if I have the YouTube app active with background playback, the new display shows YouTube as the active app. It is questionable whether the termination really makes sense. Mostly apps are active in the background, which should really do that. Also, you can’t close multiple apps at once.
