Mac Studio and Studio Display are official: Apple announced both during the Peek Performance event – follow our live stream with commentary and liveblog! The latter is the ideal complement to the former, a cube made from a single aluminum extrusion that closely resembles the Mac mini. Only in the lines, however, since the very high profile performances presuppose an inevitably greater volume.
The Mac Studio arrives on the market with two possible choices on the chip: the existing Apple Silicon M1 Max or the brand new M1 Ultra made official a few minutes earlier. Two very powerful products that, Apple said, will give Mac Studio the power it needs to serve those for whom the performance of the iMac and Mac mini is not enough. All in a product with a compact form factor, made with the attention to materials, finishes and details typical of Apple so that Studio is not only a powerful product but also as usual an object to be displayed on a desk and not to be hidden from view.
Apple has trodden the hand on the management of the air flows that will have to allow the Mac Studio to maintain the necessary coolness even under stress. It will also be bulkier than a Mac mini, but the dimensional increase seems decidedly less than that of the performance. So the designers have carefully studied the flows: the air is attracted from the base of Mac Studio, conducted up to the chip and expelled by the important grid on the back. Apple has specified that there are 2,000 holes through which the hot air leaves the Mac, all with the promise not to bore the user with unpleasant soundtracks of moving fans.
Apple has literally shown for minutes graphics that show how much this device is more performing than previous products in the Mac range. The product, designed to be clearly used in studios and therefore aimed at creatives, be it videos, images, or others, can be equipped with M1 Max or M1 Ultra chips.
To give concrete examples in terms of performance, Mac Studio’s with M1 Max has 3.8x better CPU-side performance than the 27-inch iMac with 10-core Intel Core i9. Additionally, Mac Studio with M1 Max has an overall performance 3.4 times better than the fastest iMac ever. In short, the Cupertino company has focused a lot on performance.
Under the body, there can be 8TB of SSD, as well as up to 128GB of unified memory. It also comes with a CPU with up to 20 cores, as well as a GPU with up to 64 cores. At the software level, there is macOS Monterey, while in terms of storage performance it reaches up to 7.4 GB / s. In terms of ports, there are no shortage of 10Gb Ethernet, HDMI, Thunderbolt 4 and SDXC card slots. Present support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0.
For the rest, the reveal of Studio Display has clearly arrived alongside Mac Studio, which clearly completes the package. Any features? 27 inches and 5K resolution. There is also an A13 Bionic chip.
Coming to prices, obviously relative to the United States of America for the moment, Mac Studio starts at $ 1,999 with the M1 Max, as well as $ 3,999 with the M1 Ultra. Studio Display instead will have a starting cost of $ 1,599.
