Google Maps has introduced a new message on Android and iOS explaining the permissions required to use navigation data. Without giving permission, you will not be able to use the step-by-step (or turn-by-turn if you prefer) functionality of the app.
The new dialog box starts appearing after you tap Start on the directions page and explains how navigation data improve Google Maps. While browsing, Google collects details such as your GPS location and the route you followed, the window reads. This data can be used to make information, including real-time traffic conditions and disruptions, visible to others and help them find the quickest route.
Google Maps has always used location data but is now explicitly asking users to accept crowdsourcing in order to use it and improve the service for everyone. If you do not accept, it will not be possible to start the Google Maps turn-by-turn navigation, which is the function that provides voice directions during travel.
However, Google is keen to specify that the navigation data will in no way be associated with the Google account or device, exactly as before. In short, it is in fact a way to make users more aware of the data necessary to continue to take advantage of Maps in all its features. Have you already had the opportunity to discover the new message when starting navigation?
