At the beginning of March this year, Microsoft announced at the Ignite 2021 conference that it would transfer the Edge browser to a common code base for mobile and desktop later this year. Windows and Linux Edge browsers have used the latest Chromium version. After the Google Play Store released the upgraded Edge browser, Microsoft looks ready to bring its unified Edge browser to iOS users. Now in the testing phase, a unified iOS version of the Microsoft Edge browser may be released to all users in the near future.
By using a common code base, Microsoft aims to provide new features to both mobile and desktop users. This change will bring engineering efficiency to the Microsoft Edge team because the corporate, developer and consumer features can now be enabled on all platforms at the same time.
“[The unification of the code base] is just the first step. This will improve our engineering efficiency, and what good will it do for us? It allows us to make more innovations in the mobile field now. We can deliberately change these functions from Bring them on the desktop, they are very meaningful,” Microsoft said on Ignite.
This approach will also bring much-needed performance and experience improvements between different versions of Edge browsers. For obvious reasons, the underlying rendering engine of the iOS version of the Edge browser is still WebKit, but the code base has been updated to support new features on Android and the desktop.

The unified code base support will ensure the consistency of the functions and design of all platforms and rendering engines. Today, Microsoft released the first beta version of Microsoft Edge 91 for iOS users, which matches the desktop version.
Microsoft Edge 91 (beta) has an improved interface, new menu layout and other functions. It is also equipped with a new reading mode and access to experimental flags. Using the experimental flags menu, users can force dark mode on all web pages.
The new Microsoft Edge is available as a test version of TestFlight, and you can register here. Microsoft is currently inviting 10,000 users to test the browser on a first-come, first-served basis.
