In a seemingly minor alteration, Google Messages has executed a notable adjustment by interchanging the positions of the “Reply” and “Remind 1 hr” buttons within notifications. Although subtle, this shift has had a surprisingly significant impact on users’ ingrained procedural memory.
In October 2019, Google unveiled a feature enabling users to set reminders for messages received at a time of their preference. Within conversation threads, a prolonged press on a message provides access to an alarm clock icon positioned at the upper-right corner. This functionality allows users to select from an array of suggestions or manually set a reminder using the conventional picker tool.

Conversely, upon the arrival of a new message, Google presents options such as “Remind 1 hr,” “Mark as read,” and “Reply.”
The recent modification by Google involves rearranging these actionable items, now presenting them in the sequence: “Mark as read,” “Remind 1 hr,” and “Reply.” By exchanging the positions of the last two elements, the “Reply” button now resides at the far right, slightly enhancing its accessibility by placing it between two other buttons. While operationally advantageous, this adjustment has nevertheless posed a challenge to users accustomed to the prior arrangement.
Interestingly, it’s worth noting that this nuanced alteration is presently undergoing A/B testing and has not yet been universally implemented. This shift is currently observable in version 20230808_01_RC00, the latest iteration of the beta release, while other users are yet to experience this change.
