Android 14 Beta 4 introduces a new set of profile picture images, as depicted in the attached image. It is important to note that these images are exclusive to Pixel devices and may not be available on all Android 14 devices. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have the responsibility to include their own images.
To achieve this, OEMs can utilize a Runtime Resource Overlay (RRO) to override the resource array “avatar_images” by providing a list of bitmap drawable. The images referenced in this array will be displayed to the user in the profile picture picker activity as preselected avatar images.
Furthermore, for accessibility purposes, content descriptions for each of the images must be specified in the “avatar_images” array.
For those interested in accessing the preselected avatar images created by Google for its Pixel devices running Android 14, they can be found in the SystemUIGoogle__auto_generated_rro_product APK.
It’s essential to clarify that while this change may not be a significant overhaul, there is a common misconception that features seen in Android betas will automatically be available in the base OS. In reality, certain features, such as the exclusive Pixel profile picture images, may remain limited to specific devices. Therefore, it is crucial to consider such distinctions while assessing Android updates and their functionalities.
