Samsung executives recently attended the prestigious SID Review event in Seoul’s Yeoksam-dong Business District, where they shed light on the challenges faced in the development of foldable devices. During the event, it was disclosed that Apple is actively engaged in a collaborative effort with Samsung Display and LG Display to create a revolutionary 20-inch foldable device.
Baek Seung-in, executive director of Samsung Display, presented an overview of the technical obstacles confronted by current foldable devices. These challenges include issues with foldable cracks, creases, stylus functionality, folding torque, compressive stress, and screen distortion. Despite the extensive efforts dedicated to improving the crease problem since the debut of the first-generation foldable phones in 2019, it remains a persistent challenge. Baek Seung-in expressed, “We have diligently worked for many years to address the crease issue, but achieving its complete elimination has proven elusive.”
At the event, Baek Seung-in further disclosed that Samsung Display and LG Display are jointly developing a 20-inch foldable tablet and notebook hybrid device in collaboration with Apple. However, the development process is expected to require considerable time and preparation.
Earlier this year, Ross Young reported that Apple is independently working on a 20.5-inch foldable notebook, which could potentially hit the market as soon as 2025. The news of Apple’s involvement in a foldable iPad slated for release in 2024 has come as a surprise to some, leading to speculation that it might have been intentionally revealed as a strategic move by a hinge company.
In conclusion, the cooperation between Apple, Samsung Display, and LG Display in developing a 20-inch foldable device promises to bring forth innovative advancements in the technology industry. The pursuit of overcoming technical challenges demonstrates the commitment of these companies to delivering cutting-edge products to consumers in the near future.
