In a recent beta update, the Google Messages application has introduced a captivating feature that transforms emoji-only messages into expressive and delightful animations.
Over the years, Google has consistently demonstrated its innovative approach to utilizing emojis, particularly within the Android ecosystem. Notably, the Emoji Kitchen stickers offered by Gboard have gained popularity for their ability to merge two emojis, resulting in amusing combinations.
This new emphasis on emojis within the Google Messages app allows users enrolled in beta updates (version 20230630) to experience a distinct visual representation of SMS and RCS messages that solely consist of emojis. Instead of the traditional message bubble, these emojis now appear directly within the conversation view.
Noteworthy is the inclusion of animated emoji among those highlighted in this manner, adding a touch of liveliness to conversations. For instance, the “Grimacing” emoji features a shifty-eyed animation, while the “Loudly-crying” emoji aptly conveys a cascade of tears.
As my colleague Dylan Roussel recently discovered, Google provides a comprehensive collection of supported emoji animations on its official Noto Emoji font website. However, it is important to note that sending multiple emojis in a single message will prevent the animations from appearing. Additionally, the animated emoji feature is exclusive to recipients who are also using Google Messages.
In the broader context, this update brings Google Messages in line with other chat applications, as the practice of enlarging emoji-only messages for emphasis is a common trend in platforms such as Discord and Telegram.
