Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is poised to introduce gesture control functionality, reminiscent of Google’s Pixel 4, where users can interact with their smartphones or tablets without physically touching the screen. Despite previous unsuccessful attempts by manufacturers like LG, Xiaomi is determined to give it another shot.
Recent discoveries made by renowned Xiaomi observer, K. Skrzypek, have shed light on Xiaomi’s plans to incorporate gesture control into their devices. Through analysis of Xiaomi’s source codes and accompanying official graphics, Skrzypek has revealed the company’s intention to utilize a Time of Flight (ToF) camera as the hardware component for gesture recognition. This camera is capable of measuring distances in close proximity and accurately identifying user gestures.
Also, one of the upcoming #Xiaomi devices will feature ToF camera on screen (probably tablet), allowing to

Unlike Google’s Pixel 4, which incorporated the more elaborate and costly Soli sensors that failed to gain traction in the mobile industry, Xiaomi aims to implement a more cost-effective method that primarily relies on sophisticated software. While skepticism is warranted given Xiaomi’s position in the competitive landscape as a non-leading manufacturer, the potential for successful implementation remains.
Gesture control without the need for touchscreen interaction continues to be an ongoing concept within the smartphone industry, and Xiaomi’s pursuit of this technology signifies a renewed interest in offering users a more intuitive and hands-free experience.
