A new update to Gmail for Android, version 2023.06.11.x, has reintroduced the iconic red notification app icon, reverting the previous Dynamic Color theming change made just a week ago.
The latest update, rolling out on Thursday evening, addresses the feedback received from users who found the Dynamic Color theming implementation to be inconvenient. While the previous change aligned with the contemporary Material You design, it had the unintended consequence of making email alerts less prominent in the notification shade. Given the significance of Gmail as an email service, the departure from the design language was deemed necessary and justified.
The Play Store is now delivering this update, ensuring that the red Gmail icon will once again appear in notifications on Android devices.
In terms of design updates, users are eagerly awaiting the adoption of a navigation rail for Gmail on larger-screen devices. However, as of this release, the navigation rail feature has not yet been made available on the Pixel Tablet.
Interestingly, this reversal in Gmail’s notification icon coincides with Google Play’s upcoming integration of full Dynamic Color theming throughout the app.
