Google continues its efforts to enhance and promote its Password Manager by introducing a significant upgrade for desktop Chrome users. The latest update, which is now being rolled out, brings several notable improvements to the Password Manager’s user interface.
One of the key changes is the inclusion of “Password Manager” in Chrome’s three-dot/overflow menu, making it more easily accessible to users. Additionally, Mac and Windows users now have the option to create a desktop shortcut, providing a quick and convenient way to access the Password Manager. Simply clicking on the shortcut opens a dedicated fullscreen UI with a distinctive four-color key logo and a search bar located at the top. This new interface replaces the previously somewhat hidden and nested experience.
The “Passwords” tab takes center stage in the new UI, presenting users with a simple list of their saved credentials. To further streamline the process, an “Add” shortcut is conveniently positioned in the top-right corner, allowing users to quickly add new passwords. Furthermore, the “Settings” tab now enables users to import passwords from other credential managers using a .csv file. By importing passwords into Google Password Manager, users can ensure synchronization across their logged-in Android and Chrome devices.
In addition to these improvements, Google has introduced the ability to add notes to saved credentials. This feature allows users to include additional information or context related to their passwords. These notes can be easily accessed by tapping the key icon in the address bar while browsing.
Looking ahead, Google has announced that desktop users can expect the introduction of biometric authentication in the near future. This added security feature will allow users to require additional verification, such as fingerprint or facial recognition before Chrome auto-fills a password. The functionality will also support other methods provided by the computer’s operating system.
Furthermore, Chrome for iOS will soon offer enhanced Password Checkup capabilities. In addition to warning users about compromised or leaked passwords, the feature will also notify users about weak and reused passwords. Google has also made improvements to the sign-in user interface on iOS, introducing a more user-friendly auto-fill prompt. Additionally, users with multiple saved accounts for a single website will find their accounts conveniently grouped together.
With these updates, Google aims to provide users with a more streamlined and secure password management experience across different devices and platforms. By making the Password Manager more prominent and introducing new features, Google continues to prioritize user convenience and online security.
