Apple has expanded its battery optimization capabilities with the introduction of the Optimized Charge Limit in watchOS 9 for the Apple Watch Ultra. This innovative feature utilizes on-device machine learning to assess your daily usage patterns and intelligently set a maximum charge limit for your watch.
Currently available as a developer beta and set to be released to the general public later this year, watchOS 10 will extend the Optimized Charge Limit functionality to include additional Apple Watch models. This enhancement will be applicable to popular models such as Apple Watch SE, Series 6, Series 7, and Series 8. It is also expected that any upcoming Apple Watch models released alongside the public launch of watchOS 10 will naturally support this feature.
Optimized Charge Limit builds upon the existing Optimized Battery Charging feature, which postpones the complete charging of your battery until just before your device anticipates your need for it. This approach helps minimize battery degradation caused by overcharging. The new feature takes this a step further by accurately predicting your daily battery requirements and charging your Apple Watch only to a level sufficient for your expected usage.
As a result, the charging level of your Apple Watch may vary from day to day. On some days, it may reach 100% charge, while on others, it may only go up to 80% or 90%. While the feature is optional, it is enabled by default. Additionally, it is designed to activate in locations where you spend a significant amount of time, such as your home or workplace. This recognition of frequently visited locations takes into account the fact that less familiar places may have unpredictable impacts on your watch usage and charging patterns.
Moreover, users have the flexibility to override the planned Optimized Charge Limit manually. By tapping the open charging icon upon connecting to a charger, you can select the “Charge to Full Now” option to charge your Apple Watch to its maximum capacity.
The introduction of the Optimized Charge Limit in watchOS 10 demonstrates Apple’s commitment to enhancing the user experience while prolonging the overall battery lifespan of their devices. By employing machine learning and predictive algorithms, Apple Watch users can expect smarter and more efficient battery management, providing them with the power they need precisely when they need it.
