Samsung Hardware’s next foldable cell phone will be lighter and more slender. The Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is expected to be released in the second half of this year and weighs 250 grams, has been confirmed to be developed by Samsung Electronics.
Galaxy Z Fold series
It is expected to be the lightest product in the Galaxy Z Fold series, as it weighs 13 grams less than the previous model, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 (263 grams). The thickness when the principal body is collapsed is 13.4 mm, which is more slender than the past work (14.2 mm).
Every year, smartphone performance improves. Cameras, sensors, and other components are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Due to these components, the finished product will likely be heavier or larger. It is difficult to reduce weight by 1 gram and thickness by 1 millimeter, but it is believed that Samsung Electronics is working to “diet” to a significant degree for the Z fold.
After establishing the desired weight and thickness for the subsequent product, it was discovered that Samsung Electronics conducts quality checks. It is reported that the sample being tested right now weighs 254g. The question of whether the target will further reduce the weight before release is the focus of attention.
It is known that Samsung Electronics improved the hinge and decreased its weight and thickness. A component in a foldable phone that connects the two bodies is called the hinge. It is mostly made of metal and, after the display and battery, takes up the second most space and weight in a smartphone.
Instead of the current “U-shaped” hinge, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 uses a structure similar to a “waterdrop.” The structure known as the waterdrop type hinge is one in which the display is rolled inside the main body. It is in the shape of a waterdrop, and numerous wrinkles are formed. The foldable phone can be made thinner by adopting this structure. It ensures that when the screen is folded, neither side touches the other. Samsung decided not to include the S Pen in this new foldable smartphone due to its thickness and internal space.
To break through the crowded smartphone market, Samsung Electronics is focusing on making foldable phones more popular. It planned to increase sales by more than 10% this year and sold approximately 10 million units last year.
