Google recently opened up Android Auto/Android Automotive to IoT apps. IoT apps can be built to let you view the current state of devices, offer simple one-touch on/off buttons, and notify users about events. As a result, the folks at Home Assistant are now working on adding Android Auto support!
Apps must belong to one of several categories & follow design requirements before they can be listed on Google Play for Android Auto & AAOS. The IoT category was added in December 2022.
The supported app categories are now as follows:
- Media apps (audio)
- Messaging apps
- Navigation apps
- Point of Interest (POI) apps
- Video apps (for use while parked)
- Internet of Things (IoT) apps
Instructions on how to add support for Android Auto/Android Automotive in your IoT app can be found here. The IoT category will be allowed starting in version 1.3.0-beta02 of the Car App Library.
