Working of Passkeys
FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium made this Apple Paskeys feature. This feature is meant to identify the authentic identity of the candidate with the help of encryption. The Passkeys feature has two keys one is a public key and the other is private which is stored safely on the device. To confirm the identity the application exchanges the keys and know the actual candidate. Identity confirmation via biometrics for example Face ID and Touch ID.
Step to enable Passkeys on iOS 16
- Open the settings.
- Click Password and Authentication.
- Click on the Password option.
- Turn on autofill passwords.
Before this process iCloud Passwords & Keychain are marked to the right of both categories, these two features are used to populate the Captcha section. This Apple account was also verified with two-factor authentication.
- Tap your name.
- Click Passwords and Security.
- Click to enable two-factor authentication, and follow the prompts.
For new accounts on iPhone
- After visiting a supported application or website in the Safari browser, fill in the information related to the registered account, including entering the account name, email address, etc.
- On sites that support Passkeys, you’ll be asked in a popup window if you want to save a Passkey. Click to continue.
- If the popup doesn’t appear immediately, look for an option to use Passkey or “other” forms of authentication. When the popup appears, click Continue.
- This popup will appear when you can set up Passkeys and require authentication.
For an existing account on iPhone
- For an existing account, log into the account as usual.
- Open the app or website’s account management interface.
- Search for relevant options in Account Settings, which may include a password or security-related elements. This could be in a hardware security device or a multi-factor security section.
- You’ll usually see an option to add a password, which will bring up the password popup. Click to continue.
Finally, the Apple AOD feature enables the user to customize it and Passkeys provide security and protection to the phone.
