Sony today teased some details about its upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset. After detailing the PS VR2 design and some of the games that will support it earlier this year, Sony has now confirmed that the headset will include a transparent view of your surroundings, a broadcast mode that shoots yourself as you play, And a movie mode where you can display non-VR games and media content on a virtual theater screen.
Sony’s PS VR2 see-through feature will allow players to keep the headset in shape, thanks to a camera embedded in the front of the headset. It comes in handy when you want to easily check where the PS VR2 sensory controllers are in the room. This vision sounds a lot like what Meta’s Exploration headset has to offer.
If you’re interested in filming yourself while playing VR games, the PS VR2 will include a broadcast mode that requires a PS5 HD camera attached. The broadcast mode will let you capture your movements or reactions during gameplay and share them using the built-in tools on the PS5.
As with the Meta Quest headset, you can also create a play area for PS VR2. An embedded camera in the PlayStation VR2 headset will scan a room, while the VR2 Sense controller will let you drag and drop play areas to your liking. This is very similar to the Guardian play area on the Meta Quest, if you get close to the border, you’ll get a warning about the border of the play area.
Sony’s PS VR2 will have two main modes. VR mode and movie mode. VR mode is designed for VR gaming content in a virtual 360-degree environment, and it will be displayed at a maximum resolution of 4000 x 2040 HDR video (2000 x 2040 per eye) and a frame rate of 90Hz or 120Hz.
Movie mode is designed for everything else in VR, and it drops the resolution down to 1920 x 1080 HDR video, with frame rate choices of 24Hz, 60Hz, and 120Hz. It’s really designed for watching the video, and players will be able to see the PS5’s system UI and then switch to a virtual theater screen to watch the content.
We still don’t have a price or release date for the PlayStation VR2, but Sony will share more information soon, including a release date and a roster of games coming to the platform, while developers will start getting the latest PS VR2 updates in a new system software update.
