Ahead of the weekend, we reported that Microsoft released an optional update for Windows 11. Among other things, the update without security relevance gives users the option of receiving urgent notifications when the focus assistant is activated. Focus Assist is like a do not disturb mode that hides notifications. In the meantime, however, Microsoft has had to accept reports from users who can no longer open the start menu after installing update KB5015882.
Microsoft writes: “After installing this update, we have received reports that a small number of devices may not be able to open the start menu. On affected devices, clicking or selecting the Start button or pressing the Windows key on your keyboard may have no effect.”
But there is a workaround for unmanaged and consumer devices, this issue is fixed with Known Issue Rollback (KIR). If the devices are online as usual, this should be fixed automatically. Microsoft says a restart can help.
For managed corporate devices that have an affected update installed and are experiencing this issue, users can resolve the issue by installing and configuring a dedicated group policy. Users can find the special group policy under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > KB5014668 220721_04201 Known issue rollback > Windows 11 (original version). The whole thing is described here.
