With the messenger Google Hangouts, Google introduced an additional product many years ago that was perceived to be more successful than the messenger itself: Hangouts on Air. This functionality was discontinued long before Messenger was discontinued and is now finally making a comeback – in the successor product Google Meet. Users can now stream their video conferences live.
With Hangouts on Air, Google made it possible several years ago to stream video conferences live to YouTube and thus invite a wide range of users to watch. This was very popular for a few years and made both Hangouts and YouTube live streams quite popular at the time, but at some point, it was said goodbye. Messenger is now finally on the verge of extinction, but the functionality from back then is returning.
An update now allows all users to stream their “Google Meet Events” live to YouTube. This requires a one-time connection to YouTube and activation by the admin (in the workspace environment), but can also be used by all private users.
Today there are other solutions and in my opinion, Google did itself a disservice by discontinuing this function. Still, it’s good that it’s making a comeback and maybe it will bring some users to Google Meet.
