According to Indian media reports, Samsung Electronics has decided to close its feature phone business in India in December this year and will focus on smartphones. Samsung manufactures feature phones in India through local mobile phone maker Dixon Technology. In the first quarter of this year, Samsung had a 12 percent share of the Indian feature phone market, placing it third behind Itel and Lava.
However, the South Korean tech giant is gradually losing the edge over its rivals. In the fourth quarter of 2021, the company’s feature phone market share in India was 18%, which fell to 12% in one quarter.
According to Counterpoint Research, the feature phone market accounts for about 14% of the entire mobile phone market in India. In the first quarter of this year, the global feature phone market was down 20% from the same period in 2021. During the same period, the Indian feature phone market also contracted by 39%.
On the other hand, the smartphone market in India is gradually expanding. The overall global smartphone market grew by 2% to 3% last year, but India’s smartphone market grew by 18%, with LTE and 4G mobile phone subscriptions multiplying.
In the first quarter, Samsung Electronics had a 20% share of the Indian smartphone market, placing it second behind Xiaomi with a 23% share. Samsung ranks first in 5G smartphones and smartphones at 480,000 won (about 2,457.6 yuan)-730,000 won (about 3,737.6 yuan).
Meanwhile, Samsung smartphones topped the market share rankings in the emerging market of Indonesia. In the first quarter of this year, Samsung became the top-selling smartphone brand with a 23.3 percent market share in Indonesia, according to market research firm IDC.
Samsung is followed by Chinese companies OPPO (20.2%), Vivo (17.1%), Xiaomi (14.6%) and Realme (14.6%), with a combined market share of 66.5% for these Chinese brands. In Indonesia’s 5G smartphone segment, Samsung Electronics gained a 40 percent share with the Galaxy A series and flagship Galaxy S22 series.
