Google Duo is to disappear as a brand this year, instead, Google will be relying entirely on Google Meet in the coming months. Now the beginning of the end begins. That means these days the first major update for Google Duo, also brings with it the first conversion work.
Recognizable by a notice when you open Google Duo. It says that Google Duo will soon become Google Meet and that some Google Meet functions are already being integrated. Which you can also see and use immediately within the app.
The first innovations are here: Google Meet is spreading in Google Duo
For example, the floating button on the bottom right is now different than before. She only says “New” and no longer “New call”. Behind it, there is also a new menu that is structured a little differently and brings new functions. In addition to “Create a group” and “Call my home devices”, we also see the menu items “Schedule in Google Calendar” and “Create a new meeting”. Both come from Google Meet.
Underneath these new Google Meet-based buttons is your contact list for easy video calls via Google Duo. Google had already announced in advance that Duo users would still be able to use the app, but that various new functions from Google Meet would be integrated. This includes, for example, background effects for ongoing video calls.
Google Duo will have a different name, but the app will remain
The fact is that Google Duo will be undetectable over the coming months. It should all be finished by the end of the year. The branding takes place on Google Meet. But you won’t have to re-download an app if you’re already using Google Duo today. The transition should happen as seamlessly as possible, that is the idea of those responsible at Google.
