It’s been three months since the first season of Age Of Empires IV was updated, and Relic Entertainment is finally launching its second season today. Known as “Map Monster,” Season 2 brings numerous new features such as a map preference system, a new ranked season, a new camera mode, and more.
The map preference system allows players to choose which maps to play from a pool of available maps when playing in Quick or Ranked matches. Players can “vote down” on maps they don’t like, and after the game checks their opponent’s stats, the map with the fewest downvotes will be chosen for that round.
At the same time, the key customization function has been improved again. Players can now turn off the hotkey system entirely in a grid layout, allowing each key to be independently assigned to any action. Even conflicting hotkeys are allowed.
In addition, this update also introduces a new bird’s-eye view, and players can also choose the original classic settings through options. Unit selection and readability issues are addressed by zooming out further, and the new camera mode provides a more bird’s-eye view that is said to “enhance game feel, battlefield clarity, and base management.”
Meanwhile, players who want to take on the exciting campaign missions of Age of Empires 4 no longer have to play through the four historical storylines in sequence. With this change, all missions in the single-player campaign can now be played in any order.
Additionally, other changes included in the update include a choice of custom team colors, a new multiplayer map called The Mine, and more streamlined alerts and mini-map notifications to reduce the number of duplicate markers.
Age of Empires 4 also achieves great balance across all civilizations, maps, AI, and other areas, as detailed in the official website update log. Age of Empires 4 Season 2: “Map Monsters” is now available for players to update on Steam and the Microsoft Store (PGP).
