These days there is a new branding for Google Pay on our Android devices. The Google Wallet announced in spring is now officially launched. Two months ago, Google announced that Google Pay would continue to exist, but no longer as a completely standalone app.
Instead, in the near future, Google Pay will only be a function for contactless payments via Android devices. Instead, Google Wallet is the overarching app. It will now start with the latest Google System Updates.
Google Wallet starts as a case with a new design
But there are one or even more catches. It should be clear to you that Google Wallet as a digital wallet will initially only start in the USA with more functionality. And even there that is probably not the case yet. In the changelog of the new Google System Updates (July 2022), Google writes that initially there is only the new branding and a new app design.
The changelog says the following:
- Updates the user experience to the latest Google Material design, renamed to “Google Wallet”.
Google Wallet should be able to do more than Google Pay today. There are really good plans, but they will certainly take a while to be implemented. Delays may be due to the loss of some key employees who have already left the Google Wallet team.
The rollout of new features could take a while
In a perfect world, Google Wallet can store all of these:
- Payment cards
- Boarding Passes/Transit Passes
- Loyalty cards
- Event tickets
- Car key
- Student ID cards
- Vaccination cards
- Mobile driver’s licenses (later this year)
- Hotel key (coming soon)
- Office Badge (coming soon)
After all, Google was able to keep to the “coming soon”. Google Wallet is rolling out these days, just two months after the first official announcement. Now we just have to wait for the first new features to be available.
