Yesterday Netflix announced a collaboration with Sennheiser with the aim of launching spatial audio on some of its original productions, the new feature will offer more immersive audio for all those customers who use the streaming service using headphones.
You won’t need to buy anything new to benefit from the new feature, as the company says spatial audio ” is compatible with all devices, all streaming plans and requires no surround speakers or home theater equipment .”
Spatial audio comes to Netflix
The collaboration between Netflix and Sennheiser was aimed at converting the surround sound mixes into a vast spatial audio presentation so that it can be played through stereo speakers or headphones.
From now on the normal stereo output will be replaced by Sennheiser’s Ambeo two-channel spatial audio, which will extract any surround sound or Dolby Atmos audio track and mix it into a more immersive stereo profile.
Sennheiser explains how Ambeo works: “Although Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio is not a separate mix, the creators still have granular control over spatialization. Mixers can separately define the amount of Ambeo processing for each group.
Re-recording mixers can dial in the amount of processing you want, from standard stereo mixing to the full Ambeo effect and anywhere in between. The dialogue can be left unchanged, while the maximum spatialization can be applied to the environment and the sound effects“.
At present, the availability of titles compatible with spatial audio is quite limited and includes productions such as Stranger Things 4, Red Notice, The Witcher and more; however, it is possible to search with the words “spatial audio” in the Netflix search bar to get an overview of the available titles.
As already mentioned, all this does not represent a disruption for those who watch the contents of the giant using home theater systems, but it can be a welcome upgrade for those who use the streaming service on the move using headphones.
