For the Pixel 6 smartphone, Google’s preferred manufacturing country is China, however, the latest news shows that the company is planning to shift orders for its future smartphones to a manufacturing partner’s factory in Vietnam, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. It is to avoid the risk of uncertainty.
Google originally planned to manufacture the Pixel 6 smartphone in Vietnam but decided to keep production in China due to the impact of the pandemic and strong support from the Chinese supply chain. However, the COVID-19 containment measures have Google reconsidering its options.
The Pixel 6 has become one of Google’s best-selling smartphones, with its shipments reaching about 1.2 million units in the first quarter of 2022, which also boosted the company’s market share to 3% from 1% in the first quarter of 2021.
Production work on the Google Pixel 7 has also started, but the device will continue to be made in China first since first and foremost, not much has changed compared to the Pixel 6. At the same time, Google will transfer a small number of orders to Vietnam for testing.
The source also pointed out that Google’s smartphone production line in Vietnam will be established after 2023 and will be involved in the mass production of the next-generation Pixel devices.
Foxconn’s FIH is currently responsible for making the Pixel series of smartphones for Google, while Compal Electronics is responsible for parts and components for some of the devices. The two companies already have factories in Vietnam and will be more able to help Google meet their demands.
