Most of the previous rumors about the OLED iPad focused on Apple making the iPad Pro with a 12.9-inch OLED display, but new evidence suggests this is just the first of many rumors.
Eventually, Apple will use OLED displays in all iPads because it offers brighter screens, but the transition hasn’t been smooth, and the OLED iPad Air, originally planned for a 2022 release, is said to have been abandoned due to supply issues and technical issues.
But others believe that Apple didn’t want to hurt iPad Pro sales by introducing OLED on the iPad Air, so canceled the planned product launch.
However, according to The Elec, Samsung Display and Ulvac are negotiating key technical processes required for Samsung to manufacture the displays. Importantly, this specifically relates to the manufacture of Apple’s new generation of OLED iPads.
Samsung Display and Ulvac have reportedly been collaborating on what is known as a Gen 8.5 (2200x2500mm) substrate deposition device. This means that Samsung Display can more economically create the large OLED panels needed for tablet and PC sizes (as well as panels for smartphones).
If Samsung completes negotiations as scheduled next month, it is likely to start mass production of Gen 8.5 OLED panels by the end of 2024.
The Elec has a good track record of accuracy in reporting supply chain information, however, it has a much poorer track record in inferring conclusions about Apple’s product plans.
