According to the company’s rules, you must be at least 13 years old to sign up for the service, but when the user declares that they are 18 years old and over, they will be asked to select one of the options for age verification.
You can provide identification such as a passport or driver’s license, send a selfie video, or select three friends aged 18 or over who will be asked to indicate their age range. If the user decides to upload the selfie video, Meta shares it with Yoti who proceeds to age verification using its specially trained AI and once the process is complete, both companies erase the data.
Meta said all information provided for age verification is private and will not be visible to anyone, and the company noted that devices and app stores should perform these checks so teens can have a safe experience. on all apps and services.
However, the social network admits that understanding someone’s age online represents a complex industry-wide challenge and for this reason, it is committed to continuously developing artificial intelligence so that it can detect users who lie about their age, for example by examining posts of birthdays.
