Reddit announced Thursday that the company will acquire Spell, a machine learning (ML) experimentation platform, in an undisclosed architecture. It is reported that Serkan Piantino, a former Facebook engineer, founded the platform in 2016 and is committed to providing cloud computing solutions – allowing anyone to run computationally intensive ML experiments without relying on the high-end hardware required in traditional solutions.
Spell wrote on its official website that its mission is to create the best platform for anyone who wants to use machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to be robust, reliable, and secure.
During the Reddit acquisition, Spell will be shutting down access to new commercial customers. Some team members move over to Reddit and work on ML projects to help them develop better ad placements, define contextual relevance, and keep their community safe.
Pali Bhat, Reddit’s chief product officer, said in the announcement: “Serkan and his team have a tonality that fits Reddit well. We look forward to applying his capabilities and talents to help make Reddit easier, richer, and more relevant. After the acquisition, Reddit will stick to its existing goal of ensuring that any AI work the company does is transparent and does not involve long-term bias.
In addition, Spell leadership mentioned in a blog post that Reddit is a rather special place, and they will bring a platform experience to the social network that better understands content, community and users.
