Supply chain issues are expected to persist in 2022, making it harder for console makers to keep up with demand, according to Xbox CFO Tim Stuart. Tim Stuart said on an investor conference call hosted by Baird that he expects the supply chain environment to remain bumpy this year and into the upcoming holiday season, GamesIndustry reported.
As a result of these problems, OEMs have been dealing with limited parts and trying to cope with high-priced logistics for profit, especially as the impact of China’s recent epidemic prevention and control restrictions on foundries and supply chains has been exacerbated.
In fact, supply chain issues started as early as 2020, with the pandemic affecting the launch of new-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft, and the subsequent lack of capacity and tight supply continues to this day. While it seems easier to find Xbox Series S consoles in the market, things are far from really improving for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Earlier this month, Veronica Rogers, PlayStation’s vice president of worldwide sales and business operations, said the company is planning to ramp up production this year, but it remains to be seen how that will be achieved given the current supply chain issues:
For those of you who haven’t gotten your hands on a console yet, please know that we’re planning to ramp up PS5 production significantly this year, and we’re working endlessly to make sure the PlayStation 5 is available to everyone who wants it.
If you’ve managed to get your hands on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox X/S series of consoles, you’re lucky, as the future isn’t particularly bright. We’ll let you know more about the current-generation console’s availability soon.
