According to MacRumors reports, last week, Bloomberg Mark Gurman said that Apple is considering launching a new 12-inch notebook in late 2023 or early 2024. It’s unclear if the notebook is a lower-end MacBook or a higher-end MacBook Pro, Gurman said.
In response to the report, Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consulting revealed that he is currently “skeptical” about the new 12-inch MacBook.
“We are currently skeptical about the 12-inch MacBook,” Ross Young wrote in a tweet shared with superfans. “Apple’s notebook strategy is currently 13 inches and larger. None of the MacBook Pro display supply chain companies we spoke to mentioned this.”
It’s possible that Apple is still so early in the development of a new 12-inch MacBook that the company’s supply chain is currently clueless about the plan. As Gurman points out, Apple also often prototypes various products in-house and doesn’t always move forward with releasing all of them.
Apple has released low-end and high-end 12-inch MacBooks in the past. On the lower end, Apple introduced an ultra-thin 12-inch MacBook in 2015, but that notebook was discontinued in 2019. On the high-end side, Apple offered a 12-inch PowerBook G4 in the mid-2000s, before the original MacBook Pro was released.
