Yesterday, the European Union agreed to a single standard connector for all battery-powered consumer digital electronic devices that support wired charging, and that’s USB-C, a port already found on most smartphones and tablets.
The ruling would force Apple to add USB-C to the iPhone, one of the few popular products that use a proprietary charging cable. Apple has time to implement the change until 2024, but we already have rumors that the iPhone 15 will adopt the interface.
The iPhone 15 Pro models will be the first to switch to USB-C, though, but Apple might do things a little differently. Apple has been following a specific pattern when making new iPhones. Not every new generation will have a major redesign.
And when design changes emerge, models, a year later will offer minor tweaks. Plus, all iPhones from the same year run on the same powerful next-generation mobile chips. The iPhone 14 will bring some big changes to Apple’s iPhone strategy. It’s important to know these before looking at the new iPhone 15 Pro USB-C rumors.

Leakers and analysts agree that in terms of the overall design, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will look like last year’s iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will offer a new notch design, they will have holes punched at the top of the screen for Face ID and the selfie camera, and the bezels should also be thinner than their predecessors.
Finally, in terms of specs, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will get the new A16 Bionic chip. Less expensive models will continue to use the A15. All iPhone 14 models will have the same Lightning port on the bottom, and while Apple may have tested USB-C models this year, buyers will have to wait another year to get the port.
We’ll note that Apple may want to continue to differentiate between non-Pro and Pro iPhones in the years after the iPhone 14, and it may be reasonable to bring USB-C to the iPhone 15 Pro across the board. A leaker named LeaksApplePro said on Twitter that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will get a USB-C port next year.
The cheaper iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Max will continue to use Lightning for a year, and since new EU rules won’t take effect until 2024, Apple can still make iPhones with its proprietary charging port until then.
In addition, the leaker said that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Max will completely switch to USB-C in 2024, and the iPhone 16 Pro version may also adopt a no-interface design, thus completely bypassing EU regulations. The leaker said the timeline came from his sources inside Apple. But assuming the information is accurate, Apple’s plans could change at any time.
