Developer Jerry Bezencon announced today the official release of the Ubuntu-based Linux Lite 6.0 distribution. The update, codenamed “Fluorite”, is based on the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) system, powered by the long-term supported Linux 5.15 LTS kernel series.
For Windows users who want to migrate to Linux, this release of Linux Lite 6.0 provides the latest and greatest Xfce 4.16 desktop environment and provides an excellent user experience.
Linux Lite 6.0 comes with a new default window theme called Materia, which comes in both light and dark styles, supports a variety of applications, and is designed to maintain the familiar look of previous Linux Lite versions, a new one called Lite Patch New in-house built tools for applying emergency security fixes, and a brand new GRUB bootloader menu with “reboot” and “shutdown” options.
In this release, new assistive technologies are available for hearing and vision-impaired users. These technologies include the popular Orca screen reader application, the Onboard on-screen keyboard, and a screen magnifying glass tool that can be accessed using the left button + mouse scroll combination.
Since this is a major update, the default software has suffered some changes. For example, since upstream Ubuntu releases no longer provide native DEB packages for the Mozilla Firefox web browser, the default web browser is now Chrome. Of course, users will still be able to install Firefox, but through the Lite package manager.
In addition, Linux Lite 6.0 comes with a new system monitoring application, the System Monitoring Center, as well as the El-Torito ISO authoring tool. Some existing applications have been updated to newer versions, such as VLC 3.0.16, GIMP 2.10.30, Mozilla Thunderbird 91.9.1, and Libre Office 7.2.7. Additionally, the Thunar file manager and Xfce terminal emulator applications have been updated to provide a close confirmation dialog, and a new version of the Whisker menu has appeared.
