Samsung joins forces with Hyundai Motor Group to bring even more technology to the automotive world with the Samsung Galaxy S22. The current top range from Samsung, as well as other selected models of the brand, can be used to access the Genesis GV60, the new electric SUV made by Hyundai, by unlocking the door thanks to a special integrated sensor and UWB technology. Here are the details of this new feature.
The smartphone to unlock the car: the new project from Samsung and Hyundai
A Samsung smartphone can take the place of car keys by opening and closing the door wirelessly. The project was carried out by Samsung in collaboration with another Korean industry giant, Hyundai Motor Group. The new technology will debut on the all-new Genesis GV60, an SUV that combines electric drive and top-of-the-line technology.
Samsung Galaxy devices can be paired with Hyundai’s vehicle and then be authorized to unlock and lock the doors via a digital key system. The system in question is based on UWB wireless technology that allows the Samsung smartphone to connect and communicate directly with the car, bypassing any intermediary. In this way, you can register a digital key inside your Galaxy smartphone.
The key is available thanks to the Samsung Pass digital signature, ID and password storage system. To take advantage of the service, owners of a Genesis GV60 (or future models that will support this technology) will need to install the Genesis Connected Service app, register the car information in the infotainment system and select the Digital Key menu on the screen and Register on the Genesis app. The registration procedure will be automatic.
The car can be “unlocked” in two ways. The vehicle can be unlocked by pressing the door handle when the smartphone is in a bag or pocket. Alternatively, unlocking can take place automatically, simply by approaching the car with the smartphone. The user can choose, from time to time, the system to use according to his needs.
Furthermore, through Samsung Pass, it is possible to access some functions of the Hyundai vehicle remotely. Thanks to the app of your smartphone you can, for example, sound the horn or start the car even before entering the vehicle. The application will therefore offer access to a range of functions, useful for managing your car even more completely.
Furthermore, the digital key is not unique and can be shared with friends and relatives. Directly from Samsung Pass, in fact, it is possible to send the digital key to a maximum of three contacts who will be able to access the vehicle using their Samsung smartphone. Compatible smartphones are:
- Galaxy S22 +, Galaxy S22 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy S21 +, Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold2, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra
The sharing of the digital key can take place, however, with the following smartphones:
- Galaxy S20 series (excluding S20 FE), Galaxy Note20 series, Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy Z-Flip 5G, Galaxy Z-Fold 2, Galaxy Z-Flip 3 running Android 12 or later
