At I/O 2022, Google said the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro will have a “next-gen” Tensor processor. And now it seems confirmed that the new tensor will again be produced by Samsung.
Now, unsurprisingly, Samsung is set to produce Google’s next Tensor chip. The SoC of the second generator will then be manufactured in a 4nm process. The current tensor is manufactured using the 5nm process. The new sensor is said to be manufactured using PLP (Panel Level Package) technology:
PLP is a packaging technique where chips cut from a wafer are placed on a rectangular plate. It is possible to minimize the edge of the wafer, thereby reducing costs and increasing productivity.
Mass production for the 2nd generation Tensor is scheduled to begin in June. The new Pixel 7 series will probably not be released by Google until October.
So far, Google has only said that the next Tensor chip will bring “even more helpful, personalized features for photos, videos, security and voice recognition” to the Pixel 7.
