In a lengthy document detailing its video game business, Sony unveiled the sales of its PC titles, including the revenues they have produced so far. The company expects strong growth for this segment, so much so that it can speak of “exponential growth” to be sustained beyond the fiscal year 2022, which has just ended (it closed on March 31, 2022).
However, we see the data:
- Horizon Zero Dawn – 2,398 million copies sold – $ 60 million in revenue – launch date August 7, 2020
- Days Gone – 852,000 copies sold – $ 22.7 million in revenue – launch date May 18, 2021
- God of War – 971,000 copies sold – $ 26.2 million in revenue – launch date January 14, 2022
The growth in overall revenues of the PC business year on year is interesting: in fiscal 2020 they were 35 million dollars, in 2021 they grew to 80 million dollars while in 2022 they reached 300 million dollars. In short, we are obviously talking about a rapidly expanding segment.
It is therefore clear why Sony has increased its investments in the PC, in anticipation of an enhancement of the offer, as shown in a subsequent graph of the same document, which shows the growing volumes of the various platforms on which the company is active.
It is interesting to note that Sony expects a decisive growth in the mobile and PC sectors by the fiscal year 2025, which will join the PS5 on a permanent basis. The difference in business diversification is visible to the naked eye by comparing the graph of fiscal year 2025 (but also that of fiscal year 2022), with that of fiscal year 2019, which was practically a single-color PS4.
