Tesla has begun building a new supercharger station in the Mojave Desert between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and it is likely to become the world’s largest supercharger station. Has 100 charging piles.
Tesla is currently rapidly expanding the size of its Supercharger network. At the end of 2020, the company installed 23,277 charging points at 2,564 supercharging stations. By the end of 2021, the company’s super-charging stations will increase to 3,476, and the number of charging piles will increase to 31,498, an annual growth rate of 35%.
However, this expansion still lags behind the delivery of Tesla’s electric vehicles. Over the same period, Tesla’s deliveries of electric vehicles rose 87%. In addition, Tesla is now beginning to gradually allow owners of third-party brands of electric vehicles to use the network. It also lags behind Tesla’s own goal of tripling the size of its Supercharger network within two years.
However, we are seeing an acceleration in the expansion of Tesla’s charging network, with more than 2,000 new chargers installed in the last quarter.
Unlike many other charging station operators, Tesla is also known for deploying larger, more charging stations, rather than just four to eight, as companies like Electrify America or eVgo do. Tesla, for example, has begun building a new Supercharger station in Barstow, California, with 100 charging points in the Mojave Desert between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Barstow Mayor Paul Courtney confirmed the news this week. He revealed that Tesla has already started building supercharging stations locally. Tesla already has two Supercharger stations in Barstow with 16 and 18 charging points respectively, so Tesla is not without charging capacity in the area, but it will be a major expansion of charging capacity.
Meanwhile, Tesla has several other charging stations on the roughly 500-kilometer route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. After all, this is a very popular and busy route, and more charging stations are necessary.
Many electric vehicles, including the Tesla brand, can make this journey while parking and charging. At the same time, while reducing range worries, these charging stations can also provide owners with restrooms or lunches.
If Barstow’s new charging station does have 100 charging points, it will be the largest supercharger in the world, comparable in size to the supercharger expansion at Harris Ranch in California.
Tesla often deploys its own ancillary facilities, such as cafes and restrooms, at larger Supercharger stations. It’s unclear if the new large charging station will be equipped with amenities, but it is adjacent to The Outlets in Barstow, a large open-air shopping center with many amenities.
