According to Famitsu’s public data, Microsoft’s Xbox sales in Japan last week finally surpassed the local PlayStation game console. This is the first time that Xbox sales have surpassed PlayStation since 2014.
The data shows that the sales of the Xbox Series S alone reached 6,120 units, compared with the total sales of Sony’s PS5 optical drive and PS5 digital models of 2,693 units. The main reason for the overtaking of Xbox sales this time is the shortage of PS5. Of course, the XSX/S and PS5 are out of stock in most markets around the world, but the PS5 is even more out of stock.
By comparison, the PlayStation 5 sold 49,798 units last week, while the Xbox Series S sold 1,000 units, and similarly, the Xbox Series X sold 3,508 units last week and only 105 units this week. This milestone is notable because sales figures for the Xbox family in Japan are notoriously weak across generations.
According to a recent report, only 2.3 million Xbox consoles of all generations have been sold in Japan as of February this year since the original Xbox consoles came out 20 years ago. The vast majority of them are Xbox 360s (1,616,128 units).
While the PlayStation 5 has done well in Japan, even selling a million units faster than the hugely successful PlayStation 4, due to out-of-stock issues and the dominance of the Nintendo Switch, Sony is currently only ranked in the console market. in second place.
As of early March, various Xbox consoles have sold the following quantities:
- Xbox – 472,992
- Xbox 360 – 1,616,128
- Xbox One – 114,831
- Xbox Series X/S – 142,024
It is worth mentioning that compared with other platforms in the Japanese market, the sales of Xbox game consoles are not many. At present, PS5 has sold more than 1 million units in Japan, while Switch has reached 20 million units. In addition, the cumulative hardware sales of the NS in Japan have surpassed the 3DS this week, leaving the NDS and Game Boy ahead.
