The iF Product Design Award was first introduced in 1954 and includes awards for a multitude of design companies. Google received a prestigious iF Gold Design Award for implementing Material You design and Dynamic Color in Android 12, reaching a top spot in the “Communication” category for 2022.
The Android 12 operating system relies heavily on custom color choices for the entire smartphone experience and culminates with devices from the Google Pixel family.
Google’s Material You receives the prestigious iF Gold Design Award
The Material You design represents one of the most comprehensive Android updates focused on user experience, as it enables a high level of flexibility and scalability while maintaining consistency across product ecosystems and successfully reflects a human mental model in its visual design language.
The iF Gold Award designation page mentions the consistency and flexibility of the Material You as fundamental principles of everyday experience and praises the user-centered approach.
This looks set to extend with the upcoming Android 13, as the recent beta hinted at even more controls and automated theming elements for Material You and Dynamic Color. The iF Gold Award badge was also awarded to Apple’s AirPods Max headphones, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 and iPhone 13 smartphones, and many other products.
