A few months ago I presented to you here in great detail the status of the Xperia division at Sony and actually I wanted to give you the specific figures later today. Because according to Sony, these are now only available once a year.
Sony Xperia: A slight increase in sales
It’s been a year since the last update, so I’ve been digging through the business numbers for FY2021 – and found nothing. In any case, no specific figures, such as those communicated with the PlayStation, but only the turnover.
Here I can tell you that we were able to improve a bit compared to the previous financial year. Not much, only around 60,000 euros, but the division’s turnover is also only around 600,000 euros, so in percentage terms it’s okay.
That doesn’t mean Sony sold more units, by the way. FY2020 it was 2.9 million units, but since then fewer models have been used with a slightly higher price. So maybe Sony only sold 2.5 million units.
In 2018 it was 6.5 million units, and in 2019 it was 3.2 million units, so the downward trend continues or it stagnates. The Xperia smartphones no longer have their own division, they are part of “Electronics Products & Solutions”.
Sony Xperia: No forecast for 2022
By the way, Sony has not given any forecast for smartphones in the business numbers for FY2022, although it will show a new flagship tomorrow. However, Sony has also emphasized that smartphones will continue to exist, and we will stick with them.
We asked Sony why the specific sales figures were not included. Perhaps there has also been a rethink since 2021 and a decision has been made against public figures after all. If we get more details on this topic, we will submit them in the next few days.
