Google was in a hurry to spread the Material You design, because around the launch of Android 12 last year, numerous apps were converted to the new color and shape within a few weeks – but not all of them. Now a first glimpse of the Material You design has been spotted in the Google News app. However, it could still take a while before the rollout.
The Material You design introduced with Android 12 is characterized by the fact that it brings a little more color to the surfaces, enables new shapes and, despite numerous guidelines, feels like it breaks away from some specifications. This design can already be seen in many Google apps and soon Google News will also be part of it. Through a teardown with adjusted parameters, it was now possible to activate the first hint of Material You in the app.
The screenshot on the left shows the current design and the other two show the Material You variant. The difference is currently only visible in the navigation bar at the bottom. Instead of coloring the entire icon and the title, only the icon itself is highlighted in color in the new variant.
This is already known in the form of some other apps that have already been converted. However, the color is currently still set by the app and not dynamically selected based on the home screen background image.
Other areas for the Material You update are in the works, but it will probably take a few more weeks before it can be rolled out as a complete package for all users.
