Following the release of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS “Jammy Jellyfish”, the development team is now focusing on the next major release of this Debian-based GNU/Linux distribution. According to the plan, Canonical will release Ubuntu 22.10 “Kinetic Kudu” later this year (October 20). The six-month development cycle will officially begin with the upload of the toolchain later this week (April 28).
According to the official release schedule, the Ubuntu 22.10 Beta version will open for public beta on September 29. The two Ubuntu Testing Week events, held from June 30 to September 1, will encourage the community to actively participate in the test.
Like the Ubuntu releases mentioned earlier, Ubuntu 22.10 will build on the existing ones, so it’s too early to talk about the new features.
One guess is that Kinetic Kudu will use the GNOME 43 desktop environment scheduled for September 21, 2022 (hopefully more GTK4 applications).
In terms of kernels, Ubuntu 22.10 should follow Linux 5.19 – after all, Linux 5.10 won’t be officially released until early October, and the kernel freeze development phase is scheduled for October 6, 2022, so Canonical doesn’t have enough time to test.
It should be noted that despite the latest and most powerful GNU/Linux technology, the support period for Ubuntu 22.10 is only nine months (until July 2023), and friends who need to choose LTS long-term support version.
Finally, when Canonical releases its first daily build ISO image, we will also keep up with the testing and development of the latest tools and software components.
