Yesterday Blizzard announced World of Warcraft: The Wrath of the Lich King Classic, or the faithful revival of one of the most beloved expansions of the MMORPG. The world of Warcraft Classic nostalgia operation over time has proved to be a success and has been particularly appreciated by players, but apparently, at the moment Blizzard is not sure if it will continue the initiative with the next expansion, or Cataclysm, and in this sense, much will depend on the wishes of the community.
In an interview with IGN, Brian Birmingham, head of the WoW Classic project, and production director Patrick Dawson were very cautious on the subject, explaining that Cataclysm represents a breaking point in the history of World of Warcraft that has radically changed the gaming experience and therefore may no longer be considered “Classic”.
“We’re trying to find that balance where we can preserve the classic feel and still make sure we offer people new things to do,” says Birmingham. “Because obviously if you play it again, you’ll get to the end. And you’ll say, “I want more.” We’ll try to make sure we find something that is satisfying for people and that has the feel of the Classic experience. Whether it will be Cataclysm or not we have not yet decided and we will certainly hear feedback from the community.”
“The whole game was a love letter to fans when we decided to create World of Warcraft Classic originally… When we launched Classic we really focused on that. We weren’t even thinking about the next step, but almost immediately people said they also wanted Burning Crusade and later Wrath of the Lich King,” Dawson added. “We’ll continue to focus on Wrath of the Lich King and make sure it’s an amazing expansion for players, but then we’ll take some time later to stop and see what players are saying, what they’re thinking and what they’re feeling.”
We remind you that World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic will be available during 2022. Blizzard yesterday also announced the new Dragonflight expansion, for which beta registrations are already open.
