According to reports from several users, the latest PS5 system update prevents you from changing the image settings of some TV models, especially those that support ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), a function that aims to reduce input lag as much as possible. The problem has been examined in the latest HDTVTest video that you find below, where we also talk about some possible partial solutions.
As explained in the video, with the 22.01-05 update released last month, now PS5 forces TVs to start allM if supported. As a result, when I activate some templates block certain image settings, all by virtue of lower input lag, which in itself is not a bad thing. The problem however is that unlike what happens on Xbox Series X|S, Sony for the moment has not integrated an option to prevent the auto-activation of the ALLM on PS5.
As a result, users in this sense apparently have no choice: once the ALLM is activated, some settings are literally blocked and cannot be changed even if you do not use the classic “game mode” preset of the TV (or “Game Optimizer”).
Let’s be clear, a low input lag is usually a great advantage for the player, but in some cases, users may prefer to use various video processing options (which usually negatively affect input lag) in titles that may not be very dense with action, such as Life is Strange: True Colors just to give an example, to improve the visual rendering of their panel.
The solution in this sense is to deactivate the ALLM directly from the TV, which however is not possible with all the panels and in some cases, this involves the automatic deactivation of the VRR, a feature much appreciated and that in the near future will also be supported by PS5. Or in the case of the LG C1 (and C2) models, it means giving up HDR and 120Hz. In short, we are talking about a partial solution to the problem.
The hope in this sense is that with one of the next system updates Sony introduces on PS5 an option to choose whether or not to activate the ALLM directly from the console.
