With the electric XC60 Recharge and C40 Recharge, Volvo is already selling two models that come with Android Automotive. And Polestar also relies on Android Automotive, the Polestar 2 was even the first car with this OS.
Volvo switches to Android Automotive
Many brands will follow in the future and Volvo revealed a year ago that they want to convert all cars, not just electric cars. And now it’s finally starting because from the 2023 model year Volvo will be completely relying on Google.
The Volvo S60, Volvo V60 and Volvo XC90 are now moving to Android Automotive, all models produced from May will be delivered with the OS. And they are then finally ready for OTA updates because that is standard here.
Although Android Automotive is optimized for electric cars, which can be seen in the apps, combustion engines can also enjoy a modern OS. And as far as I know, these will remain the only combustion engines with Android Automotive.
Incidentally, Volvo would like to scale Android Automotive even more in the future and has already teased a new version with Google that will be faster. But they are not available for combustion engines, they are intended for new electric cars.
