Chromebook users have just been able to celebrate the anniversary with the update to Chrome OS 100 and on their device – but without photos. Many users are reporting these days that the camera app no longer works and shows neither the live image nor the photographed subject. Unfortunately, this also affects external access, so video conferences and video calls are currently only possible to a limited extent.
Google advertises the Chromebooks as a very secure and stable alternative to the competition, but things can go wrong with Chrome OS too – and that’s currently the case. Numerous users from several countries and with different Chromebooks report that the camera is not working. Although the camera app can be opened and used without an error message, you can literally see black in both the preview and the captured image.
If it only affected the camera app, which is probably not used that often on Chrome OS, you could get over it. But the problem runs deeper because all other apps with camera access also deliver the same result. This means that video calls and video conferences are currently only possible without a picture.
A welcome excuse for some, but a very annoying problem nonetheless. Google has now confirmed it and is working on a fix. It will probably take a few more days for the problem to be resolved, and perhaps the update to Chrome OS 101 will enable the camera again. This is expected by the end of the month.
