Earlier this month, an experimental flag called “Tab Groups Save” was introduced in a new version of Chrome Canary. It allows users to save tab groups to favorites and quickly launch grouped pages with one click. Now, Microsoft is preparing to borrow the same functionality for its Edge browser with additional improvements.
Leopeva64-2 discovered that the ability to pin tab groups was introduced in the latest version of Edge Canary. This feature works like pinned tabs, so the browser can open pinned groups the next time you start it.
In addition to pinning the group on the tab bar, Microsoft Edge will also “save” the group on the favorites bar, allowing you to restore the group with a single click. The same functionality is available in Chrome, but due to its experimental nature and early implementation, Chrome does not retain groups across shutdowns.
Microsoft appears to be A/B testing the improved tab groups in Edge Canary, so only a subset of Edge insiders can test groups. You can check if your copy of Edge Canary has this feature by right-clicking on any tab and selecting “Add Page to New Group”. After that, the browser should offer you to rename, assign a color, and pin the newly created group.
