5 years after launch, Nintendo Switch finally adds folders

Five years after its launch, Nintendo has finally added a folder function to the Switch. The much-talked-about feature, which Nintendo calls “groups,” will allow users to more easily manage their library of games on the Switch’s main menu.

To use this feature, users must download the latest Switch firmware, version 14.0.0, after which pressing the L key will display the grouping. Groups are only available if you have more than 12 games saved on the Nintendo Switch system. You can create up to 100 groups, and each group can have up to 200 games. The same game can be added to multiple groups.

“You can categorize your favorite software however you want, and using theme groups can make games easier to find,” Nintendo describes. Firmware 14.0.0 also brings changes to how Bluetooth audio controls work on the Switch, with volume controls on the system now correctly reflecting the device’s own controls.

In its latest financial results announced in February, Nintendo said that the Switch has become the best-selling home console in its history. The console has shipped more than 103 million units, surpassing the Wii’s total of 101 million units, and the Switch had 98 million annual users last year.

A senior industry analyst recently predicted that Nintendo’s next console will launch in 2024, with no “Switch Pro” models arriving until then.
