Brazil has lifted its ban on Telegram after the country’s top court blocked the messaging app on Friday for failing to comply with a court order, The New York Times reported. The court reversed the injunction after Telegram made some changes to help curb misinformation in the country, including deleting classified information shared by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and deleting accounts belonging to Allan dos Santos, an activist Home and Bolsonaro supporters, accused of spreading misinformation.
In addition, Telegram promises to flag posts that contain false information and promote posts that contain factual information. It will also have its employees keep tabs on 100 of Brazil’s most popular channels, according to The New York Times.
Telegram, which has more than 1.1 million users on the platform, has become a favorite communication channel for Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under investigation for leaking police documents and has been accused in the past of spreading false information.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, an opponent of President Bolsonaro, ordered a ban on the app, which lasted only two days after the software developer sent a letter clarifying. As Telegram CEO Pavel Durov explained, his company changed its mailing system without taking any advance notice action, and subsequently, they have been receiving letters in the wrong email inbox, failing to see the Brazilian Supreme Court sent to the old Email address for letters.
