To complement the Windows 11 system, the MS Paint application has been greatly improved in terms of user interface and functionality. While there’s a big visual improvement, parts of the app still rely on Windows 8-era code. Microsoft has confirmed that not every dialog has been updated. Important dialogs, like color pickers or resizing tools, still use the old design, with no sign of Fluent and WinUI 3.0.
Thankfully, the Paint app further enables WinUI elements in today’s update. As the screenshots show, the Paint app now has updated Edit Color, Resize and Skew, and other dialogs to match Windows 11’s design principles. Additionally, you can now shift-click on a color block to select that color as your secondary color.
In this update, there are multiple bug fixes and improvements. For example, fixed an issue where text boxes would move unexpectedly when using IME. Also, another bug was fixed where some dialogs were not localized correctly in certain regional languages.
Last but not least, the MS Paint update adds improved support for screen readers. It’s worth noting that the new Paint app is rolling out to Windows 11 users in production channels (not tied to any internal programs. It’s also fair to say that when the feature update rolls out later this year, the Paint app will be pre-installed on Windows 11 In the 22H2 version, this is quite safe.
