Android Automotive OS, the Google operating system intended for car infotainment systems – not to be confused with the Android Auto service – is finally opening up to video applications, starting the various YouTube, Netflix and similar.
The news comes after the rumor of a possible adoption of the operating system in question on the next BMW cars had circulated in recent days and after the new official logo had leaked just today.
Android Automotive OS closer to Tesla: here are (almost) the video apps
It is undeniable that the Google team is working hard to improve the Android Automotive OS a lot and quickly. The new official documentation relating to the creation of “Video Apps” for this OS is undoubtedly a step in the right direction.
The “Build video apps for Android Automotive OS” developer page must have gone online these days and Google is using it to guide them in developing and adapting their video apps for Android to the car operating system. In order to prevent the usual controversy of the case, it is worthwhile to immediately report the premise made by Big G at the beginning:
“Android Automotive OS allows users to run your video app on a car’s infotainment system while the car is parked”.
In short, of course, these apps will not represent a risk in terms of safety, as they will only be usable with the vehicle parked. The practical result of this opening is that developers now have the tools to adapt their apps for Android to Android Automotive OS, which will therefore very soon allow them to take advantage of services such as YouTube, Netflix and so on. This umpteenth piece further narrows the gap between AAOS and Tesla, which has long allowed us to do something similar.
